[edit] Decolonialisation

  • Definition:
During this past year, the Special Committee consulted with some of the administering Powers on a series of actions that would trigger a process of decolonisation in these territories within this decade. I welcome this development, and I hope it continues in full partnership with the administering Powers, as well as with the active participation of the peoples of the territories. The aim must be to promote their political, economic and social development and determine the final status of each territory1 within the framework of the three options envisaged in resolution 1541
free association, integration with another State, or independence."
UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan

[edit] Suggested Collaborations with Faculty Cartography to un-map colonial fantasies and placenames:

  • Abbotabad
  • Jacobabad.
  • In Bangladesh, the only city with a Western name appears to be Cox's Bazar.
  • There is a station called Margherita near Tinsukia, Assam. The name comes from the days of this line's construction which was supervised by Italian engineers in the 1880s. They named this place after the then queen of Italy.
  • Mc Cluskieganj, in a remote part of Bihar, was started by an Anglo-Indian of that name around the time of independence. His idea was to start a separate colony for Anglo-Indians who could live off the land (since it would no longer be easy for them to get jobs in independent India). However, this colony never prospered.
