Proposition: "This server is going off-line on the 31st December 2004.."

Questions:

  • (31/1/05: What was the upshot of the debate? Who is paying the UO bandwidth bill?)

> obviously, it hasn't gone off-line yet. At the moment, SaulAlbert pays the hosting bill for this wiki and server. There are other wikis and servers as detailed on the UoServers page, but this is still the most often-used site.

> It would be great to have the faculties disperse into their own wikis and systems - and simply point to each other in various places. It would also be good to have some kind of distributed backup system and and an easy way for people to start their own things totally independently (maybe using OpenMute or something)...

Comment from UncleFester:

Free MoinMoin wiki farm here if Faculties wish to use it. Not an ideal solution but a possibility.

Comment from FredericMadre:

The FacultyForTheInterpretationOfImages is going to move soonish to here

before this happens some questions of overall consistency of UO should be resolved I think like

  • ok I understand that the url should be, in my case, http://uo.pleine-peau.com (right ?)
  • now I wish to host the above mentioned faculty but not more than that (is that a problem ?)
  • BUT i wish to have somewhere very visible some form of UO homepage which lists the other faculties ? (what would it look like ? how maintained ?)
  • and would like also to have/give easy access to the recent changes for the whole of uo (how to achieve this ?)
  • last question, for now, does this mean that there should be a central uo hub that is just a connecting point or merger of all shared data (probably)

>- last question, for now, does this mean that there should be a central uo hub that is just a connecting point or merger of all shared data (probably)

This should be really easy to do - as long as each wiki publishes RSS feeds, we just have a feed aggregator that sits in some neutral central spot, aggregating recent changes from all the uo wikis we know about. In some cases, we could use interwiki links to link them together, in others, multiple versions of pages on multiple wikis just make the world more interesting no?

I'm swamped in other things right now, as is Jo, who has talked about doing some kind of feed aggregator (I think she mentioned it on list). I'm quite ignorant about feed aggregation technologies. I've used moveable type plugins to do ths (theps.net) but would prefer something a bit more 'live'. Any suggestions? -- SaulAlbert

I didn't realise this was an issue. I can host the uo mailing lists, wiki's and databases for free indefinately on darq.net. When we started the UO back in 2002, I suggested we get a domain name. I still think that's a good idea, because people think that the UO is a Twenteenth Century project. Darq Ltd will cover the cost of that too, if we can agree on a name. -- IanMorrison

I agree that a domain would be good - to host a feed aggregator from uo.foo.bar - and maybe some lists. I am planning to relocate twenteenthcentury.com/uo/ to uo.twenteenthcentury.com/ on another server soon - which should sort out the silly amount of downtime we've been having. -- SaulAlbert
