[edit] Logo Saga
There have been many suggestions for the Uo logo. Here is a complete history of those suggestions. New ones are always welcome, please add them here. If you want a logo to come back, or want a new one to go on the wiki, make some noise on the UoMailingList.
There has also been a long saga of naming the University, not always amicable, but always interesting. The last NameChange was in February 2003. You can always try initiating another one if you want to.

UncleFester's suggested logo:
[edit] )U(
Explanation:
The symbol )( is already in use to denote an open node of a wireless network. It is derived from the reversal of enclosing parentheses. The )( ideogram is not dependant on knowledge of any particular language to be understood although it is based on Western characters. The letter U is similarly multi-lingual and is commonly used as an abbreviation for University.
Advantages:
- Meaningful in several languages
- Meaning can be derived from existing knowledge of symbols
- Simple, symmetrical and visually distinctive
- Textual logo - does not require image files
Disadvantages:
- Hard to search via Google

- Here are a couple of variations on the theme for another logo for the UO - after having come up with something that looked like the classic Mexican riding a bike wearing a sombrero, I thought I'd stick with something simple both conceptually and in execution.

The open book one makes strange optical illusion if you scroll up and down quickly - the pages seem to open and close slightly.
