Thankless but vital link-making, wiki-gardening and technical/social/historical maintenance. The UoJanitor wears a pair of blue or grey one-size-fits-all-dungarees and a tool-belt containing an infinitely large and diverse collection of tools, toys, and flavoured prophylactics. The UoJanitor needs all this because the maintenance of the Uo is infinite, and calls for an infinite number of skills and aptitudes.

Training is done 'on the job', so one of the roles of the Janitor is to encourage and foster other janitorial staff, without having to 'teach' as such. Of course wondering the corridors of the Uo late at night, tweaking a motto here, polishing a logo there, checking the plumbing and sweeping behind the bicycle sheds is training in itself, and often turns up the most interesting research.
