[edit] Climbing Club

[edit] Urban climbing is a group activity, participants engage with architectural features and street furniture creating a change in perspective and a sense of multiple possible modes of engagement with the built environment. Using what would, in a conventional university, be an extra curricular activity as a central research method.

[edit] Activities take place no more than a few metres off the ground, no climbing equipment is used and only the most basic level of physical ability is needed, the climb is scaled to the ability of the individual participants.

Lottie Child and the University of Openness Climbing Club will host a Risk Conference join call lottie 07956547696 on Sunday 28th August at 6.30pm see RiskConference

[edit] Climbing report May 2nd

We met at 11.30 Nine of us attended: Sally, Mutsumi, Mus, Arthur, Dougie, Ben, Carl and Lottie, five year old Ruby was unable to come, she was too excited. The sun shone, we tackled the trees in the square in front of the Lloyd's building then scrambled on the roof of what I think must by St Mary Axe. It wasn't long before we were asked to climb down, which took some doing and gave the vicar a chance to see our skills as we descended. The raised walkway over Bishop's Gate was a pleasure to scale as were the walls and trellis work beneath the Natwest tower, the tower its self still seems unclimbable. It's good to see that we are having an influence in the city, a new fence and gate has been erected since the last time we were in that area. 99 Bishops Gate has an internal courtyard that was possible to climb down into but tricky to back out of, two thirds of the way up knees began trembling. The security guards did their jobs. The Barbican provided good climbing, jumping, fountain bathing and statue shagging opportunities. After a while we emerged onto a busy street and found ourselves wondering what fun could be had with moving cars. In a square beside St Paul's some of us actually enjoyed chasing a pigeon, possibly for the first time since any of us was in nappies. We climbed up to the best picnic spot in the city at around 3pm.

[edit] Climbing report March14th

It was raining when we met up making the corporate marble surfaces great for skidding along. First we climbed to the top of a very tall building opposite the Lloyds building (using the fire escape) and surveyed the cold grey streets. We made our way at first floor level and found a good climb up the side of the pillar holding up a raised walkway over Bishops Gate. People found elegant and humorous ways to negotiate perfectly good stairs, clambered around on railings and balconies. There were things to climb on and around St Botolphs church, even though playing games is prohibited behaviour in the churchyard, (along with washing dogs and mending chairs.) After an hour of this we felt like a band of gritty urban adventurers so we went for latte on Brick lane.

[edit] Sunday March 14th 1pm

Location: opposite the Lloyds Building on the Corner of Leadenhall Street and St Mary Axe.

Meet to climb on buildings and street furniture in the City of London . Risk in the City means taking a risk with unconventional behavior and playing in the street.

Assess your exposure, manage and minimize your risk, scaling buildings and trying new things with your body; with a bus shelter or a letterbox or whatever you fancy.

Interact with railings, fences walls and other architectural features previously unexplored in terms of their potential for play.

Meet - Sunday 9th November.__

The faculty of ?PhysEd invites you to Climbing Club this Sunday.

Search the city for corporate climbing frames and invent urban Olympic feats. A firm favorite, the "getting from A to B without touching the floor unless you're holding your breath" technique will sometimes be applied for getting about, ensuring satisfaction and avoiding summitism.

Meet: Leadenhall Opposite the Lloyds building at 1pm Climbing Reports Climbing Club Sunday 7th September

Climbers met at the South Bank, where we blended with the other cultural fare on offer, a skate kid noticed our vertical arrival ("I've heard about these people") . Climbers Saul, Kate, Lottie, Robin and David from the Tower Hamlets wheelers. We agreed our destination should be David Blane hanging from a crane in a glass box for 44 days just next to Tower Bridge. We had no problem climbing into the underside of waterloo bridge using the ladder provided, didn't hang about, heading east buggering about on the wall along the beach till we got into Blackfriars bridge with pigeon shit infested struts and evening sunlight, easy! Found a sleeping place with the remnants of candles and a pile of children's books, something about a cat and some church mice going on a journey.Next to Blackfriars, some people climbing up a wobbly ladder, if you could do it you got a tenner Saul and Robin couldn't do it, every one else looked smug. When traversing the Thames side wall approach to tower of London, a male commentator was heard to evaluate trespass techniques of LC & KR saying - well if Security comes they'll be fine of course because they're girls and they can just cry. Stayed next to the river climbing as we went, it got dark, saw David Blane, (shuffled about in his box). Sunday August 17th

We met on Leadenhall opposite the Lloyds building. Present were Rob, agent Saul, Mike, Agent gestapo bob harris, Tenyen and Lottie. We decided on the not touching the floor unless you are holding your breath strategy. Edged our way around some fantastic corporate climbing walls and made some daring leaps all the while sticking to the rule. Came across self-seeded mini corporate orange tree thriving in a crack on a walkway. Visited a very high up and exclusive garden, we had to stop our selves climbing/jumping it out or sheer habit. Ten knew a wonderful secret roof where we had a picnic and which we might show you if you come along next time.
