ThoughtsOnTheWikiSpamProblem

Wiki Spamming has been solved. Simply put rel=nofollow on every new URL unless it has been edited by an authorised user. Then the authorised users can go through RecentChanges and remove the nofollow tag from real URLs. The spammers will go away when they see this. see also http://ourmayday.org which was under very heavy bot attack, which was reduced by blocking Internet Explorer (the bots love microsoft it seems )

Hmmmm. Blocking IE doesn't seem ideal but I guess it's an option. Suspect it would stop a lot of Uoniks posting though. - UncleFester

Might be a good way to encourage people to wean themselves off IE and onto something like Mozilla though...plenty of people only use IE out of inertia - Mary

hiya mary, uncle, yes i agree, some people have ideological problems wiv IE, anyway its pretty easy and fast to download firefox, and free too. but i think also a strategy is to embrace the spam and start spamming / counter-spamming ourselves:

Crao also uses php-wiki and they suffer from spam too. It's pretty all in french though - crao-wiki: wiki-spam. Turning down IE users ain't really nice, despite it might a possible way. Depends on how popular you wanna be. -- MattisManzel

Blocking IE on anti-spam/ideological grounds is ok for those with control over their means of production, but for those of us dependent on abusing the resources of employers (in this case the BBC) who only provide IE on their system, it's a bit of a fucker. -- Dougald

Seen chongqed-wiki? MattisManzel
