It has been suggested that tracking the evolution, of the words and symbols adherents of a belief system use in reference to themselves and their practice, is a useful aid in understanding its nature.
Very few things in life are static. Despite whatever "true believers" may say about the stability of their beliefs, a little research will probably reveal something about its prehistory.
