Consider, for example, the bullshit trumpeted by the Student Loan Brigade in attempting to get all young people into debt for a meaningless degree by using the promise of an earnings differential that only made sense when there weren't very many graduates. That is: you'll earn more so it's OK to get into debt. And then what happens to these wide-eyed graduates when they emerge and find (and this goes for the supposedly high-end universities too) that what's actually needed for entry in the rat race is not the stuff they've learned but simply a certain learned viciousness.
Consider the flexible labour market - a euphemism for precarity. Consider the dissolution of traditional foundations for confidence: God, empire, all that. Consider the paranoia oozing off the pages of the Express and the Daily Mail, that constant sense of having been conned by someone - Brussels? asylum seekers? people with beards? Arguably this crabbed griping has been fertilized by this same vanishing of middle class security...
I think Madeleine Bunting touches on this somewhere in 'Willing Slaves'.
There's good discussion along these lines here .
