A breathable fabric. Its microscopic pores permit egress of water vapour but prevent liquid water from passing in the opposite direction, keeping the wearer dry. You can overload the fabric's ability to transmit water vapour: the maximal rate is about a litre/square metre/hour (which only an athlete could easily exceed).
