[edit] About the School of Memetic Engineering
The projects listed here are ongoing and planned experiments in meme creation and propagation carried out by the School of Memetic Engineering. In most cases the goal of these projects is to engineer memes for release 'into the wild' by means of the Internet. Successful memetic engineering results in stable, sustained development and propagation of a meme post-release. Poor engineering results in an unstable meme which propagates poorly and is subject to high mutation rates. The School seeks to develop the skills required for successful memetic engineering and to study the development and propagation of memes post-release.
[edit] About the Department of Laminated Signs
- Branch of School of Memetic Engineering
- Small-scale experimental meme release in a controlled environment
- More to come!
[edit] Ethics
The School encourages responsible behaviour at all times. While it cannot prevent Faculty Members from the engineering or release of malignant memes, all Members are reminded that the development of a meme post-release is outside the control of its creator. Moreover the nature of successful memes is such that they spread infectiously and cannot easily be eradicated. Thus all Faculty Members are asked to consider carefully the possible malignant effects of meme release before proceeding to that stage.
[edit] Current Projects
- Faculty of NLP and Applied Memetics
- Concept sketch for Uo Propagation Project
- Testbed and nursery for ideas in a collaborative, persistent, shapeable environment
[edit] Projects at Planning Stage
- Uo Propagation Project
- Exactly what it says on the box
- Cross-faculty input will be solicited for this project, particularly from the Faculty of Collaborative Research
- Bonsai Haiku
- Experiment in evolved poetry using collaborative input to exert selective pressure on randomly mutating memes
- Requires coders skilled with MySQL, Python/Perl, PHP
- Possible coder interest on this from a Known Acquaintance
- Meme Garden
- Experiment in open, collaborative creative writing in pseudo-Dadaist tradition (Exquisite Corpse)
- Requires further structuring and more development of seed memes to illustrate the model for participants
- Message in a Bottle
- Distributed and collaborative funding and research model
- Requires significant skill and time to implement
- Legal questions to be addressed before implementation (UK Law on illegal lotteries)
- Padawan Linux
- Debian and Gentoo based Linux niche distributions
- Specifically aimed at common Ebay laptops (Libretto? - subnotebook but old*)
- One for the Faculty of Unix to run with?
