[edit] Faculty Setup How-to

If you are interested in the Uo's study methods but your research requires its own faculty, please feel free to set one up. Here are some suggestions based on how other faculties have been started.

[edit] Socialised research

Research at the Uo can be any activity, the Uo is a mechanism for valorising and building on or breaking down that activity. Although individual operations are useful for some purposes, the Uo provides an opportunity for socialising research activity - sharing results and engaging with others in the assessment and representation of research.

So basically, a good way to start is to form a gang. This is also just more fun than doing things in isolation.

[edit] Representation

Although radically undocumented or secret faculties may never leave a trace, one way to present and invite further contributions to research is to create a Faculty homepage. This could be a website on your own server, or you are welcome to use the uo wiki.

The wiki is a website that anyone can edit (try clicking the edit button at the bottom of this screen). So to start your own faculty homepage, just read the HowToUseWiki page, and then make a link to the new faculty page from the uo HomePage. There are also mentions of the faculties on the following pages:

  1. AboutUo
  2. UoMailingLists (if you want to add a new mailing list too)

The wiki is a useful tool because it allows intelligent humans to use dumb machines - rather than the other way around (like most content management systems). New and interesting methodologies of wiki usage, specific to Uo research are emerging from the use of the Uo site. Have a look at how other faculties use their wiki pages by clicking the 'edit' button on any page, and cloning it for your faculty.

So you may want to update those pages to reflect the arrival of the new Faculty.

OR, start your own Uo server .

[edit] Let the uo know

The Uo is a great resource of people, some may share your research interests and be good to work with so do let people know when you have founded a new faculty on the Uo mailing list .

You may also want to found a new mailing list for the new faculty or project. If you do, you could link to it from the UoMailingLists page.

[edit] Mailing lists / Wikis

One good way that mailing lists and wikis work well together is that you can cut and paste good suggestions from the mailing lists straight into the wiki - that way you gather relevant information without having to sit down and write stuff for hours.

Then again, there is no reason that any researcher or faculty should feel the need to use a computer at all.

[edit] That's all.

It's that simple, but there may be other good bits of advice that should be added to this page, if so, please edit and develop it, or leave comments below:
