The following collection of principles are offered by the FacultyOfProblemSolving in order to encourage a positive experience of solving problems.

They may not always be applicable, they may even contradict, but they have been placed here because a member of the faculty found them useful. Sources are (or will be) indicated where known.

  • Everyone is a problem solver.
  • People are more important than process.
  • Problem solving can be fun.
  • Unsuccessful attempts can be learnt from.
  • Sometimes not knowing helps.
  • There is usually more than one way of being right.
  • If your are stuck, phone a friend.
  • Being stuck is a perfectly respectable situation.
  • The first solution you think of, may not be the best.
  • Collaboration is good. Just ask the folks at CollaborativeResearch.
  • Computers don't solve problems, people solve problems.
    An anonymous ACM member.
  • "In reality, there are few problems that can be solved by a simple yes or no. The challenge of true problems is unique. Their solutions demand a thoughtful and balanced consideration of all the 'pros' and 'cons' involved."

    Manfred Eigen / Ruthild Winkler-Oswatitsch

  • "What concerns everyone can only be resolved by everyone."

Friedrich Dürrenmatt, taken from The Daily Miscellany.

  • 6.5 billion people+, equals 6.5 billion problem solvers.
A reply made to someone concerned that there are "too many people" for our planet
to cope. (+ As of 18/11/2006)

Update 24/04/08: There are now 6.65 billion of us. :)
