Institutional Outsider Solves Shape of Universe Problem

Ever wondered what the possible shapes of the universe could be? No? Well Grigory "Grisha" Perelman seems to be about to get confirmation that his solution to this famous problem - set in 1904 by Jules Henri Poincar� - is sound.

The only thing is, he seems to be about to do the equivalent of mooning the institutionalised mathematics establishment: `"I think he's a very unconventional person. He's against being involved in pageantry and idolatry," said Arthur Jaffe at Harvard University. "But he carries it to extreme which people might describe as a little crazy."'

"In August, the Russian became the first person to turn down a Fields Medal, the highest honour in mathematics."
