[edit] An invitation to attend the CartographicCongress
Dear Cartographer,
The Faculty of Cartography of the University of Openess would like to invite you to attend and participate in a week (or more) of the Cartographic Congress, a meeting of mapmakers and maps from all contexts of cartography due to take place over 6 weeks from May 5th to June 14th 2003.
We would be very pleased if you would like to propose a map for display in the Hall of Maps (a 6 week presentation of the maps at the congress). Alternatively (or even better, in addition) we would be interested in your proposal for or a map project, a workshop, a presentation, a research project or whatever suits your practice best.
About the University
The University of Openness is a self-institution (run and administered by its members) for the furthering of auto-didactic, collaborative learning. At present we have four faculties: the Faculty of Cartography, the Faculty of Unix, the Faculty of Collaborative Research and the Faculty of Physical Education. For more information on the University, please refer to one of
- ur websites: http://uo.twenteenthcentury.com.
More About the Cartographic Congress
NB: The uo recognises that differences between art and cartography are not always self-evident or fixed,1 and that maps are complex, subjective
- bjects that demand a critical reading.2
The form of the congress at this point is: A series of maps, mapping processes and other materials, collected and presented in and around Limehouse Town Hall (an independent cultural production space in East London) . A map showing the location and context of these maps in the hall will be produced. This is not an exhibition, the normal funtions of the Hall will still progress.
For a period of 6 weeks starting in May 2003, cartographers will install or initate maps or projects, and at the end of each week a congresses will be held at the town hall, bringing together contributing cartographers and guests to make links between their maps, eat wonderful food, and discuss their practices and chat informally.
Each week there will be a field trip to a site of cartographic relevance within reach of London. There will be the scope for public presentations, dependent on each suggested project. Several have already been planned for the 6 week period.
Although projects and events will develop during the week, most meals and trips will be planned for the weekends so that more people can attend (starting on the weekend of Saturday 10th May).
Until May, and after that event it will gather resources, links, research directions and materials here on the UofO wiki (and on other UofO wikis). This resource is already growing on on of our wikis at <http://uo.twenteenthcentury.com/index.php/FacultyCartography>
If you have suggestions for field trips, meals, projects, or participation
in any of the above ways, please get in touch via the UoMailingList (see
below), and add yourself to the CartographersInResidence page. We are also
interested in suggestions you may have for other participants we have
- verlooked in our initial round of invitations.
There is more information on how you might want to structure your participation on the How-to page (http://twenteenthcentury.com/uo/index.php/CcHowto/)
There is a developing schedule at http://uo.twenteenthcentury.com/index.php/CcSchedule. Please have a look and get in touch to communicate about syncing up your event with what is already happening.
We hope to hear from you soon,
Sincerely,
The Faculty of Cartography
