Field trip to Orford Ness & Suffolk Coast

  • with Matthew Flintham / Tom Taylor

[edit] If you want to share a lift / meet before driving from London:

Meet: 10 am., Saturday 24th May: (sharp!), Limehouse Town Hall (directions here )

Secure your transport: There may be some liftshares on offer - mail the uo list to find out if there's anyone with spare car space.

[edit] If you want to rendezvouz there:

Those intersested should make there way to Orford Quay around 12:00 where a ferry should pick up visitors at regular intervals, and take them over the river Ore to the Ness. Here they should either check in at the National Trust outpost and part with five pound sterling or brave the site unguided. Visitors should be prepared for a lot of walking on loose shingle and genuine suffolk mud. Last ferry back is at 5pm. If you intend to stick around go to http://www.orford.org.uk/seedo1.htm for places to stay back in the village.

Returning: late evening the same day.

Phone contact: saul on 07941255210 on the day. Bring provisions and waterproof clothing, although apparently the weather is going to be lovely.

"The largest vegetated shingle spit in Europe, Orford Ness is recognised as having great nature conservation importance. However, it has spent much of the 20th century shrouded in mystery as a Top Secret military test site. From birds to bombs, marshes to missiles there is nowhere quite like this unique part of the Suffolk coast."

But many other sites - Bentwaters Parks and Woodbridge USAF/RAF bases, separated by Rendlesham forest (ufo country) and nearby Bawdsey Manor will make interesting visits too.
