Making a mockery of something can be the most effective way of disempowering it, or at least containing it, removing its dominance. The religious practice of giving away a certain amount of your income is a version of this: not only (hopefully) have you done practical good with that money, you've also broken the spell the rest of your material goods had over you. No one who has tithed or paid zakat can take Mammon's creed entirely seriously... (Of course, religious traditions have been used to oppress, to do violence, to pervert the means and ends for which they were created - only, don't mistake the failure to achieve it for the goal...)
