The AMP (TenantsAssociation of Panjab) has been involved in a dispute with their landlords, the army, ie the government of Pakistan for many years, resisting the imposition of a cash rent system and upholding their claim to the land as the workers of the land for many generations under the crop sharing agreement from before the colonial regime of the British.
They have successfully resisted the army and the police on their land, through self-organisation, in the face of state violence, assassination and imprisonment of tenants on terrorism charges. The mixed Christian and Muslim tenants have worked and resisted the state and the landlords side by side with women and men also standing as equals in organising and working for their self-determination.
All this has attracted the attention of many NGOs and political parties in Pakistan and beyond. There has also been infiltration by military and police intelligence services, and recently there has been a split amongst the leadership and he ranks of the AMP.
Recently the army returned to the villages to reestablish their check points and stopped the tenants from cutting their crops and working the land. The tenant however still turn out in their thousands to protest.
